Can We Have a Moment Without the Precious Cell Phone?
The Split Second-In Consideration of Others in These Trying Times
I wrote yesterday that I would conclude my discussion about the “almighty” cell phone which is a significant part of my unpublished book The Split Second: In Consideration of Others or Look Up from the Phone and How to Deal with Rudeness in Others. Then I watched the Golden Globe Awards last night. I would mention that I lost count of how many times the host, presenters, and award recipients were “bleeped,” over their words, and on live television at that, but I will save that discussion for another day. I keep this discussion to the “sainted” cell phone.
I found it amusing that several award recipients took out their cell phones as they went up on stage to receive their awards. Yes, these people did not know they were going to win. I must be fair about that. For several years now, I have found it amusing as well when award winners take out a small piece of paper to read off when they are presented with their award. Now, some have it ready to go on their phones. They often have to ask the award presenter to hold the actual award while they read off their speeches from the phone. This reminds me of the time when I accepted an award for someone else at an event when I was in college. I had no idea that I would be speaking, and yet, I managed to speak a few words of gratitude and salutation for the winner. To be fair, I was not on live television broadcasted across the country and other parts of the world, but it could have been. I bring all of this up because I wonder: are we becoming a society where we cannot go anywhere (think of my previous blog of men texting while relieving themselves in the men’s room) without our phones, or it will be like we have had a limb severed off of our being? One had to wonder.
Another short blog, folks!
